I just feel like the original controls just require a few minutes of patience to get used to and bam, you've got yourself one of the greatest games of all time at your fingertips. It's 40 per cent off if you already own System Shock 2 on GOG. I do appreciate the enhanced controls though, like I said it opened up the game to more people, which is great. The DOS adventure is now available to download for 5.29 (it's usually 6.59, but there's a launch sale) via GOG.com. Plus, you could argue that SyS1 isn't really a first person shooter in the same sense that Doom is, it's an action adventure game that happens to have ranged combat from a first person perspective, and the controls fit that. For you, perhaps not, but I'd revisit shock 2. It ultimately comes down to the player's preference as to whether that's enough. Using the mouse cursor as an extension of the player's hand(s) just feels really good, like how a good VR game feels nowadays. As for the 'datedness' of the enhanced SS2, it's getting a few upgrades including upgraded textures, fixed multiplayer, other bug fixes and restoring cut content (apparently). ![]() The game's levels and combat encounters were clearly designed around the scheme, and I just like how versatile and tactile it feels. The 'Mouselook mod' comes to us from 'Malba Talhan.' Though many thought it impossible, he's managed to add support for (you guessed it) mouse look, mouse sensitivity, and configurable keys. System Shock: Enhanced Edition is a modern source port of the 1994 game System Shock offering features such as hardware acceleration, improved widescreen, in-game control rebinding, and more. The remake was developed by Nightdive Studios and published by Prime Matter. In my opinion, it's not THAT complicated, it's just unusual. System Shock is a remake of the 1994 game of the same name. ![]() Unfortunately these keyboard shortcuts are less than convenient for modern standards. But about the mouselook, in youtube vids i seen where players can snap out of the cursor-like mouse look view to cross hair all around view, like you would with todays shooters. Few people know that System Shock has (and always had) a shortcut for both reloading and switching alternate ammo types (Alt+ Backspace and Ctrl+ Backspace). ![]() I might be in the minority though, because I actually prefer the original control scheme. Just bought SSEE today and played it for the first time in my life, i got used to the controls super fast. I know many consider the original control setup for System Shock to be strange and unuserfriendly, and luckily the mouse look mod and then eventually the enhanced edition's enhanced controls made it far more approachable.
