Split tunneling allows the user to segregate these tasks, keeping the company data secure while allowing unrestricted access to the public internet. Without split tunneling, the VPN would route all internet traffic through the company’s network. For example, a remote worker might want to securely access their company’s intranet via a VPN to download confidential files while at the same time stream a region-specific show directly over their local internet connection. It is useful when someone wants to access a private and public network. The advanced feature allows users to exclude certain apps and websites from the VPN tunnel. Split Tunnelingīoth NordVPN and Hotspot Shield come with the split tunneling feature (although Hotspot Shield calls its split tunneling feature Smart VPN). NordVPN uses IKEv2/IPsec, OpenVPN and NordLynx to keep your information safe from internet service providers, hackers and governments. Unlike most VPN providers that adhere to standard security protocols, Hotspot Shield uses its own proprietary Hydra protocol, which it claims maximizes security and speed. The dedicated IP is an add-on feature and is not automatically included in NordVPN’s plans. A dedicated IP helps secure access to business servers, secure online payments and allows access to IP-restricted resources. One of the biggest differences between the two services is the fact that NordVPN offers a dedicated IP while Hotspot Shield does not. While Hotspot Shield has less servers, the platform has a larger number of server locations, which offers more geographic location options for accessing geo-blocked content. A larger server number usually ensures faster speeds due to less user load per server and increases connection success rate. While Hotspot Shield advertises it has more than 800, NordVPN has almost 6,000 servers. One of the biggest differences between the two providers is the number of servers.
